Since 1994 Capital Studio Architects has exclusively provided design services to Mystic Aquarium. Projects range from the design and construction of Dr. Ballard’s office’s, to Design of the Research and Education Center, Penguin Pavillion, Master Planning, Theaters, office additions, and numerous ancillary designs.

In 2001, CSA was selected to design a creative solution to meet the programmatic requirements for Dr. Robert Ballard’s Institute for Exploration at Mystic Aquarium.  On two floors and totaling approximately 4,400 square feet, the final solution physically connects the original Aquarium building with the 1995 “Exploration Challenge of the Deep” Exhibit building.  The saw-tooth curtain wall metaphorically represents a rocky shoreline against the blue ‘rolling wave’ of the Exhibit Building.  From inside, the office spaces offer the sense of being on the prow of a ship or particularly at night, as if underwater.  These ideas are clearly compatible to the exploratory achievements of Dr. Ballard.
